Stocks fall, Nasdaq drops as Netflix slides after subscribers miss

Stocks were on track to end a volatile week lower, with investors rotating further away from growth and technology stocks that had outperformed early on during the pandemic.

The S&P 500, Dow and Nasdaq fell during intraday trading. A day earlier, the Nasdaq Composite dropped more than 1{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}, adding to losses after sinking into a correction earlier this week. The Nasdaq has fallen nearly 12{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} from its most recent record high from November through Thursday’s close.

Shares of Netflix (NFLX) sank more than 20{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} after the company posted a first-quarter subscriber growth outlook that fell far short of expectations, with the streaming giant projecting 2.5 million new users for the first quarter of 2022 versus the 6.3 million anticipated, according to Bloomberg data. Shares of Disney (DIS) and Roku (ROKU) fell in sympathy. Meanwhile, Peloton (PTON) — which had been another darling of the so-called “stay-at-home” trade during the pandemic — recovered some losses after falling to a near two-year low on Thursday, after CNBC reported the company was cutting production of its fitness products due to flagging demand.

“It is these infamous stay-at-home plays … that had been bid up to valuations that get to the point where they’re priced for perfection,” Mark Luschini, chief investment strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott, told Yahoo Finance Live on Thursday. “Anything that is released about the companies’ investment results or prospects that doesn’t meet or exceed very elevated expectations leads to gigantic disappointment in the form of a share price decline.”

“This is indicative of companies that, again, have valuations that have been bid up by investors who, on disappointment, decide to sell first and ask questions later, and therefore leave huge carnage in their wake as valuations compress to better reflect prospects under a more normal economic climate,” Luschini added.

The drop in many closely watched, highly valued technology stocks — and the broader stock indexes — also came alongside ongoing investors jitters about a potential near-term move on interest rates from the Federal Reserve. The Fed’s next policy-setting meeting is set to take place next week, with market participants largely pricing in a first interest-rate hike out from the central bank after the Fed’s March meeting. These expectations for higher rates and less liquidity from the Fed this year have also been a key driver of recent equity price action, many strategists noted.

“I think there is a rotation going on towards those areas of the market that have been neglected for a long time — not just months, but years. Areas like financials and energy. Even health care, which is an area that had done a bit better during the pandemic, but really isn’t seeing any kind of multiples like it did in the past,” Jeffrey Kleintop, Charles Schwab chief global investment strategist, told Yahoo Finance Live on Thursday.

“I think those areas of the market have more durability here as we look at an environment where earnings growth is slowing so valuations matter more,” he added. “And many of these companies can look to generate earnings growth in this environment of rising interest rates and commodity prices, whereas tech is a bit more challenged as goods demand begins to slow.”

1:04 p.m. ET: ‘I certainly think technology and growth is going to be a sector you want to be in’

As the Nasdaq sinks further into a correction and individual technology stocks come under considerable pressure, some analysts see the pick-up of tech earnings season next week as the start of a potential reprieve for at least some of these growth names.

“The re-thinking of valuations really just follows in the wake of rising interest rates. So we averaged 1.5{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} on the yield on the U.S. 10-year for all of last year, and this year we likely average somewhere between 1.75{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} and 2{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996},” National Chief Market Strategist Art Hogan, told Yahoo Finance Live on Friday. “So that price and value calculation is obviously putting pressure on multiples across the technology complex.”

“At some point in time we’ll look at this and say we’re probably overdone and we’ve taken too much multiple compression,” he added. “And what likely will be the signal that that’s the case will be when we get into earnings season in earnest next week … and see where the winners and losers really sit.”

“I certainly think technology and growth is going to be a sector you want to be in [for] 2022,” Hogan said. “But I think you want to be in it in companies that measure themselves in price to earnings.”

10:40 a.m. ET: Leading Economic Index posts solid jump in December: Conference Board

An index tracking future domestic economic conditions accelerated in December, pointing to still-solid growth trends in the U.S. even amid ongoing concerns over the pandemic, inflation, and a more hawkish tilt to monetary policy.

The Conference Board’s closely watched Leading Economic Index (LEI) rose 0.8{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} in December, matching consensus estimates, according to Bloomberg data. This picked up from November’s 0.7{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} clip, which was downwardly revised from the 1.1{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} gain previously reported.

“The U.S. LEI ended 2021 on a rising trajectory, suggesting the economy will continue to expand well into the spring,” Ataman Ozyildirim, senior director of economic research at The Conference Board, said in a press statement.

“For the first quarter, headwinds from the Omicron variant, labor shortages, and inflationary pressures—as well as the Federal Reserve’s expected interest rate hikes—may moderate economic growth,” Ozyildirim added. “The Conference Board forecasts GDP growth for Q1 2022 to slow to a relatively healthy 2.2 percent (annualized). Still, for all of 2022, we forecast the US economy will expand by a robust 3.5 percent—well above the pre-pandemic trend growth.”

Stock market news live updates: January 20, 2022

U.S. stocks bounced back Thursday from a turbulent previous session as investors weighed a series of upbeat earnings and a fresh read on weekly jobless claims out of Washington.

The Nasdaq gained 1.74{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}, recouping some losses from a volatile session on Wednesday that saw the benchmark close in correction territory — or at least 10{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} down from its peak — as rising bond yields and concerns around tighter monetary policy continued to plague investors. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 also advanced after earlier losses, each up more than 1{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} in intraday trading.

On the economic front, first-time weekly unemployment filings were up last week as disruptions from the latest Omicron-driven wave of COVID weighed on the labor market recovery. Initial jobless claims rose for the second straight week, coming in near the 300,000 level in a backslide from recent progress in the trajectory of unemployment filings. In December, the figure had reached a 52-year low of 188,000.

Corporate earnings will continue to pour in with Netflix (NFLX) scheduled to kick off tech results after the bell. Travelers (TRV), American Airlines (AAL), and Northern Trust (NTRS) reported results before the open.

The Federal Reserve is in a blackout period ahead of its policy-setting meeting next week but remained in focus as Treasury yields soared in anticipation of the central bank’s move on interest rates. The benchmark 10-year note topped 1.9{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} on Wednesday to mark the highest level since January 2020 before modestly retreating to 1.85{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}. Meanwhile, volatility in equities has persisted as investors’ expectations for growth is stymied by the prospect of tightening policy.

“At this stage in the business cycle, it’s less about the level of rates than about the shock in interest rates, and that shock will eventually wear off,” Clearnomics market strategist James Liu told Yahoo Finance Live. “You need a period where the market gets used to the fact that the Fed might have to accelerate interest rates.”

Liu added that worries have been compounded by the Federal Reserve’s game of catch-up, while investors and economists have called for the central bank to act on rising price levels.

Panic over a rise in interest rates is based on two assumptions, according to Commonwealth Financial Network chief investment officer Brad McMillan: The assumption that the increase reflects a problem with the financial markets and the belief that a change in rates suggests a move for the “correct” rates. According to McMillan, both assumptions are wrong.

“This narrative is pretty standard for this stage of the economic cycle,” McMillan said in a note, adding that headlines around potential interest rate hikes and subsequently slower growth and lower stock valuations are missing “context.”

Under the first assumption, any problem with the financial markets stems from the pandemic, and from an economic perspective, is appearing to fade, McMillan explained, adding that an increase signals a recovery from the problem, not an indicator of one. The second assumption, which says recent rates are the correct and normal ones as they are, is incorrect as well, since rates cannot currently be the “right” ones under the circumstances of the pandemic.

“If both of these assumptions are wrong — and they are — the narrative we are seeing in the headlines must be wrong as well,” he said.

In a speech on Wednesday, President Joe Biden said the burden of mitigating inflationary pressures falls mostly on the shoulders of the nation’s central bank. Fed policymakers have acknowledged in recent weeks that they stand ready to do just that.

“We’re not actually surprised by the volatility in markets this year,” Wilmington Trust senior economist Rhea Thomas told Yahoo Finance Live. “You do have a Fed that is expected to raise rates… we do expect the Fed to raise rates by 2-3 hikes this year.”

1:20 p.m. ET: Peloton shares drop after production halt

Peloton (PTON) is pausing production of its connected fitness products as consumer demand declines and the company works to curb costs, according to a report from CNBC, which cited internal documents.

Company shares plunged more than 20{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} during intraday trading to $25.47 a piece. Shares fell below the company’s September 2019 IPO price of $29.

Per the documents obtained by CNBC, Peloton is expected to pause Bike production for two months, from February to March after already halting production of the more expensive version earlier. Starting next month, the company also plans to suspend manufacturing of its Tread treadmill machine for six weeks.

10:10 a.m. ET: US home sales dip at year-end 2021

Home sales in the U.S. declined in December to ended 2021 on a low note, but annual sales activity for the entire year reached the highest level since 2006.

National Association of Realtors (NAR) reported that existing home sales fell 4.6{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} to a seasonally adjusted 6.18 million million units in December from a month earlier. November existing home sales were revised slightly down to 6.46 million from 6.48 million.

The number of sales was down 7.1{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} from the same month a year ago and came in far below analysts’ expectations of a 0.5{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} month-over-month decrease to 6.43 million units, according to Bloomberg consensus estimates.

“December saw sales retreat, but the pull back was more a sign of supply constraints than an indication of a weakened demand for housing,” said Lawrence Yun, NAR’s chief economist. Yun also attributed the slowdown in December to rising mortgage interest rates “which can produce mixed results.”

“Some people want to hurry and buy, others want to wait to buy,” he said. “Rising rates will cut into home sales.”

9:45 a.m. ET: Mercedes-Benz, Luminar partner on self-driving tech

Luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz is teaming up with self-driving sensor maker Luminar Technologies Inc. (LAZR) to pursue fully-automated driving on highways for its next-generation vehicles.

Shares of Luminar jumped as much as 18{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} in pre-market trading. The stock was up nearly 10{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} at open at $14.78 per share.

The partnership comes as other big automakers gear up to focus on autonomous vehicles, even amid a backdrop of regulatory and technological uncertainty.

“If you want to be able to get to truly autonomous capabilities in a consumer vehicle, and you have to industrialize hardware, software, all of these systems that come into play,” Luminar CEO Austin Russell told Reuters. “It is a completely different kind of business of going from a science and technology business to automotive corporation.”

8:38 a.m. ET: Jobless claims jump amid virus-related disruptions

First-time weekly unemployment filings were up last week as disruptions from the latest Omicron-driven wave of COVID weighed on the labor market recovery.

Initial jobless claims rose for the second straight week, coming in near the 300,000 level in a backslide from recent progress in the trajectory of unemployment filings. In December, the figure had reached a 52-year low of 188,000.

“Given persistent labor shortages, the trend in layoffs should remain downward as businesses try to avoid laying off workers,” Rubeela Farooqi, chief U.S. economist at High Frequency Economics, wrote in a note ahead of Thursday’s report. “However, absenteeism from the Omicron variant could make the weekly data noisy over coming weeks.”

7:30 a.m. ET: American Airlines gets boost from holiday travel

American Airlines (AAL) reported fourth quarter revenue Thursday morning that modestly beat analyst estimates and a smaller-than-expected loss amid strong travel demand during the holiday season.

The airline’s adjusted net loss fell to $921 million, or $1.42 per share, in the last three months of 2021, from $2.2 billion, or $3.86 per share, a year earlier when COVID-19 stunted air travel. The company’s total operating revenue rose to $9.43 billion from $4.03 billion a year earlier.

“Over the past year, we have experienced periods of high travel demand countered by periods of decreased demand due to new COVID-19 variants,” American Airlines CEO Doug Parker said in the earnings release. “This volatility has created the most challenging planning environment in the history of commercial aviation.”

The company’s stock was down 3.30{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} to $17.31 a piece in pre-market trading.

What Global Financial Markets Are Telling Biden About Geopolitics

Inventory and bond costs may perhaps look random on any presented working day, but there is further this means about the point out of the environment if you know where to glimpse. Beneath the potential customers of a company or the toughness of the recent economic cycle, there are important messages about the planet purchase that U.S. President Joe Biden’s advisors should really keep in brain as they get ready to update the national security method and launch the ritual drafting of his Point out of the Union speech.

Of training course, monetary markets really don’t genuinely evaluate the world’s financial system in whole, allow by yourself all of its social and political dynamics. They also distort genuine developments because of what former U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan identified as “irrational exuberance,” no matter whether it is the euphoria all over the first technology of dot-com organizations at the turn of the millennium or the total-blown stress established off by the unexpected look of a new and contagious virus two years in the past. Continue to, persistent designs in the $230 trillion sloshing about inventory and bond markets do offer a numerical evaluate of what is heading suitable and improper in the globe, a lot as a thermometer gives a tough gauge of a patient’s wellness.

As we all battle to label this confusing interval with a thing far more descriptive than the “post-submit-Cold War” age, monetary flows offer you some shockingly apparent geopolitical outlines that really should condition the president’s agenda.

Inventory and bond prices might feel random on any offered day, but there is deeper meaning about the state of the environment if you know where by to look. Beneath the prospective clients of a corporation or the longevity of the present financial cycle, there are essential messages about the world buy that U.S. President Joe Biden’s advisors really should preserve in mind as they get ready to update the national protection method and start the ritual drafting of his Point out of the Union speech.

Of training course, monetary markets really do not truly evaluate the world’s economy in full, let on your own all of its social and political dynamics. They also distort real developments due to the fact of what former U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan identified as “irrational exuberance,” irrespective of whether it’s the euphoria around the to start with generation of dot-com companies at the switch of the millennium or the full-blown panic established off by the unexpected visual appearance of a new and contagious virus two a long time back. Still, persistent patterns in the $230 trillion sloshing about stock and bond marketplaces do supply a numerical evaluate of what is likely correct and erroneous in the entire world, a great deal as a thermometer provides a rough gauge of a patient’s well being.

As we all struggle to label this bewildering time period with anything additional descriptive than the “post-publish-Chilly War” age, money flows offer some shockingly obvious geopolitical outlines that should condition the president’s agenda.

The united states nevertheless dominates. This is not totally obvious amid the headlines of democracy on the brink given that the U.S. Capitol riot or faltering U.S. leadership adhering to the Kabul airport debacle. Biden’s overseas priorities need to highlight the basic fact that the environment nevertheless has too much to handle self esteem in U.S. establishments. For all the latter’s dysfunction, investors are continue to prepared to shell out 21 instances following year’s earnings for the firms in the S&P 500 Index, as opposed to 15 for Euro Stoxx and 18 for Japan’s Nikkei. Reduced desire rates on U.S. Treasury bonds mirror flows from around the world that see no improved mixture of substantial reward and reduced possibility.

China carries on to expand aside. The world’s second largest economy even now only signifies about 4 per cent of the MSCI All Nation Environment Index, not the very least due to the fact of Beijing’s lingering obstacles to current market accessibility. Risky stock returns have been a horrible proxy for China’s incredible financial performance in component mainly because the slim combine of listed firms, spotty company disclosure, and principles restricting foreign financial investment. But the discrepancy in the index weighting actually displays the bigger truth that significant road blocks continue to be to the country’s money integration with world-wide markets. In reality, even as China continues to develop greater and richer, it may well depend far more on its personal assets and internal market place demand from customers than foreign financial investment and exports. Washington will continue on to lay out its wish record for adjustments across a assortment of Beijing’s policies, but the condition of marketplaces displays a perception that China will select its have route.

Russia continues to be a regional power. Western warnings about the mounting danger of Russian troops massing on the Ukrainian border induced a approximately 20 p.c selloff in the Moscow Exchange final drop. However at the very same time, the cost of oil—a main Russian export—moved a lot more on omicron fears than the probability that conflict may well disrupt supplies. Because U.S.-Russian negotiations finished in stalemate very last week, Russian companies’ share rates and the ruble have collapsed even further even now, even as the price of oil has surged. The crisis could nevertheless escalate with broader repercussions for energy costs, but marketplaces are telling the Biden administration that Russia’s menace is serious but not international.

Earth leaders still are not critical about climate alter. When various strategies have taken root to place a price tag on carbon, 80 p.c of world emissions keep on being unpriced. Intercontinental Financial Fund economists suggest rich international locations have to have to charge at minimum $75 for every ton to accelerate the transition to renewable vitality, but the worldwide common emissions value is $4. The president could connect with climate change an “existential disaster,” but he will will need far more than soaring rhetoric to convince marketplaces that adjust is coming. Modify is also not likely to appear right up until markets start off pricing it in.

The latest surges in vitality rates have been blamed on underinvestment in oil and fuel creation, in aspect since of environmentally friendly pressures to minimize back again on fossil gasoline output, and the day may perhaps be approaching when worries about very long-phrase source travel selling prices sustainably increased. Recent large crude charges, however, are pushed a great deal additional by immediate need recovery and OPEC’s limited administration of provide. Even sky-large purely natural fuel rates in Europe are more connected to weather and storage restrictions than the chance that gasoline creation will fall limited anytime before long.

The engineering transformation has only just started. Fears of soaring interest prices in the latest months brought on a provide-off in cryptocurrencies and know-how shares, but investors are nevertheless ready to pay back a high quality for Microsoft, Apple, and the like. These specific providers might or may not provide, and quite a few of the other present-day sector darlings will not thrive, but technological know-how valuations reflect an overwhelming sentiment that more disruption is at hand. This will mean much more than new applications that help working from property. Alternatively, it is the blend of inexpensive sensors, cheap storage, ubiquitous cellular networks, and rapidly advancing synthetic intelligence that will disrupt practically every single enterprise model.

Of training course, it is nevertheless a bodily planet in which demand from customers for commodities, industrial goods, and client products and solutions will dominate, but the most successful companies in all these sectors will be putting engineering to better use. Facts will be portion of whatsoever label historians use to explain the future decade, and the markets are reminding the Biden administration that it desires a extensive program that supports innovation, bolsters cybersecurity, makes certain knowledge privateness, and safeguards level of competition.

To be positive, marketplaces are not normally right about geopolitical threats. For all the time buyers fret about the most recent tensions in the Straits of Hormuz or on the Korean Peninsula, the odds of catastrophe are tricky to evaluate and even more challenging to correlate with money returns.

But when there are patterns that are long lasting and clear, financial marketplaces do replicate fundamental geopolitical truths. The Biden administration’s global priorities should not stop with a assessment of the market’s messages, but there are worse sites to start.

Here’s a wrap up of this week’s tough market and what’s ahead

Jim Cramer on CNBC’s Halftime Report.

Scott Mlyn | CNBC

Marketplaces completed the week decrease as traders tried to “selling price in” (locate an suitable valuation stage in the confront of bigger costs) the possible for as numerous as 4 Federal Reserve fascination price hikes by 12 months stop.

Last week, we talked about what this means for individuals investors making use of discounted cash flow styles — arguably the most diligent way to decide a company’s intrinsic value — so this week, let us get a appear at valuation multiples, which are also used to determine the “terminal benefit” in a discounted funds move (DCF) product.

In standard traders hunting much more around- to- mid-phrase (6 to 18 months out) will search at a company’s cost to earnings numerous, the various currently being positioned on a firm’s near-expression earnings. For case in point, Apple (AAPL) is envisioned to gain $5.76 for every share this fiscal calendar year — so at a cost of $172, shares trade at just beneath 30x earnings.

Nonetheless, very similar to reassessing the lower price level in a DCF model when prices increase, buyers must also reassess valuation multiples. That’s precisely what we noticed participate in out this 7 days, particularly in the significant fliers and particularly in the names that don’t even have earnings and for that reason trade on profits-based mostly multiples.

This is what you listen to getting referred to when traders point out “several contraction,” when interest costs go up (or are anticipated to go up), traders value providers working with a reduced valuation many. This is also vital to understand due to the fact when a re-score takes place, we normally are unable to seem to current highs, especially in the superior fliers, as the surroundings has altered and the sector may possibly simply just be unwilling to look back at the multiples applied in the lessen rate ecosystem. It is also why value (decreased many names) have a tendency to come into favor as premiums increase. Benefit shares commonly already have reduced multiples, creating the danger of contraction significantly less of an situation.

And finally, one particular extra phrase you will often listen to in this marketplace is GARP or development at a fair price. This is the expression utilized for all those names that strike a good blend of growth and value and could for that reason be equipped to maintain up superior when the marketing hits the significant fliers, when nevertheless delivering publicity to fundamental small business growth.

That in thoughts, when we definitely like GARP-style names, and certainly the mega cap tech names these kinds of as Microsoft (MSFT), Google-dad or mum Alphabet (GOOGL) and Facebook-mum or dad Meta Platforms (FB) arguably all tumble into this classification specified their mid-20s to lower-30s selling price-to-earnings multiples put together with large teenager to very low 20{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} anticipated growth costs, we when once again reiterate that over all, we want the shares of organizations that “make stuff and do matters” simply because in this marketplace earnings and funds stream are the most eye-catching characteristics of any corporation, not product sales growth as was the case in 2020 and early 2021 when the Fed was staying as accommodative as doable.

Here is a swift appear at some of the broader market place actions we like to keep an eye on: The U.S. dollar index pulled back again a little bit just over the 95 amount. Gold was about flat on the 7 days, investing at all over the $1,800 degree. WTI crude rates strengthened to the very low $80s-per-barrel spot. The produce on the 10-year Treasury produce was keeping at around 1.76{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} amount.
