Stocks sink after inflation soars by most since 1981

U.S. stocks sank Friday as investors digested two downbeat prints on the U.S. economy.

May data on inflation showed price increases unexpectedly accelerated last month, with consumer prices rising 8.6{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} year-over-year in May, the most since 1981. Consumer sentiment data released Friday morning came in at a record low, as inflation weighs on American households.

The S&P 500, Dow and Nasdaq dropped sharply following the print, with the Nasdaq losing as much as 3{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} in morning trade. The S&P 500 and the Dow were both down more than 2{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} early Friday.

Treasury yields spiked especially on the short end of the curve, and the 2-year yield jumped to top 2.9{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield rose to nearly 3.1{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}. U.S. crude oil prices pulled back, falling about 2{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} to around $119.40 per barrel, after rising above $122 per barrel earlier this week.

For market participants, the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ release of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was a key print, offering a fresh look at the extent to which price increases have persisted across the U.S. economy. The index unexpectedly accelerated to post an 8.6{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} annual increase in May, following April’s 8.3{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} rise. That marked the biggest jump since late 1981, and took out the prior 41-year high set in the March CPI, which rose 8.5{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}.

On a month-over-month basis, CPI also jumped by 1.0{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}, or more than the 0.7{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} rise expected, and April’s 0.3{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} increase. Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, increased 6.0{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} on an annual basis after April’s 6.2{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} increase.

Inflation has remained a dominant issue for investors, policymakers and the American public this year. Higher prices have threatened to weigh on consumer spending — the key driver of U.S. economic activity — as goods and services become increasingly unaffordable. Inflation has already shown signs of triggering a rotation from spending on some discretionary goods to other purchase areas. And on Friday, a closely watched consumer sentiment index slumped to a record low as inflationary concerns weighed on Americans.

And for investors, inflation has also become a key determinant in the path forward for the Federal Reserve’s monetary policies. As the Fed aims to help bring down fast-rising prices, the central bank is widely expected to raise interest rates by another half-point at next week’s policy-setting meeting, further increasing the cost of borrowing and doing business for companies.

Amid these concerns over inflation’s impact on the economy and Fed’s next moves, stocks have continued to trade choppily. Each of the three major averages was on track to post a back-to-back week of losses, based on Thursday’s closing prices. The S&P 500 headed for a weekly decline of about 2{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}.

“At the end of the day, markets are just faced with a whole lot of uncertainty right now. And it’s not just that inflation story,” Jack Manley, global market strategist at JPMorgan Asset Management, told Yahoo Finance Live on Thursday. “We have still some uncertainty, some lack of clarity around what the Fed is going to do. The war in Europe continues to rage. And we know there are new developments happening on that front every few days.”

“There’s a lot to digest right now. And without any sort of real clarity on these things, it’s hard for markets to meaningfully move higher or lower,” he added. “It’s all markets really want at the end of the day, is news. And no news is bad news.”

11:08 a.m. ET: (Almost) nowhere to hide in Friday’s market

Our inboxes were flooded Friday morning with economist reactions to the May inflation data, and several shops used “nowhere to hide” as their main hook for talking about this data.

But this framework applies to the market as well on this ugly Friday morning.

The Nasdaq is off 3.3{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} about 90 minutes into the session and the S&P 500 off 2.6{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}, while all 11 S&P sectors are lower and 8 of these are off more than 2{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} in morning trade. There are almost no safe spaces in this market right now.

In the true risk-off part of the market, ARK Innovation (ARKK) is down over 6{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} and the 2021 class of SPACs and IPOs are under pressure as well. These have been some of the best performers in the rally we’ve seen investors try to put together over the last few weeks.

“The Generals” — the group formerly known as the FAAMNG stocks — are all down more than 3{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}, however, showing the widespread stress Friday’s action is putting on investors. Apple (AAPL), which has held up better than any of the other mega cap tech names through this market sell-off, is again the most durable performer, falling 3.5{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} in morning trade.

Consumer Staples (XLP) is the best performing sector so far in today’s trading, down just 0.4{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} and rallying since the open. Grocery stores are the lone bright spot in the market today, as higher food prices will likely pass through to these companies’ bottom lines in the coming months.

10:33 a.m. ET: Consumer sentiment slumps to record low: U. Michigan

Consumers sentiment fell to its lowest-ever recorded level in early June, with rising prices at the pump especially weighing on Americans’ wallets.

The University of Michigan’s preliminary June consumer sentiment index dropped to 50.2, or an all-time low since the institution began tracking the data. This followed May’s index reading of 58.4, and missed estimates for 58.1, according to Bloomberg data.

“Consumer sentiment declined by 14{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} from May, continuing a downward trend over the last year and reaching its lowest recorded value, comparable to the trough reached in the middle of the 1980 recession,” Joanne Hsu, director of the Surveys of Consumers for the University of Michigan, said in a statement.

“Consumers’ assessments of their personal financial situation worsened about 20{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996},” Hsu added. “Forty-six percent of consumers attributed their negative views to inflation, up from 38{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} in May; this share has only been exceeded once since 1981, during the Great Recession.”

Hsu also noted that half of all surveyed consumers mentioned gas unprompted in their interviews, up from 30{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} in May.

The S&P 500 fell 0.7{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}, the Dow lost 0.5{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}, and the Nasdaq declined by 0.7{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} on Wednesday.

After rallying to start the trading session, the major averages slipped following solid readings on the U.S. manufacturing sector, which were shortly followed by Dimon’s comments at an investment conference.

Data from the Institute for Supply Management showed the U.S. manufacturing sector grew faster-than-expected in May, another signal that fears of an imminent downturn in the U.S. economy may be overblown.

The April report on job openings from the BLS also showed a decline in the number of job openings, a data point the Federal Reserve is likely to view positively as it works to cool the labor market.

The biggest corporate headline of the day crossed at around 3:30 p.m. ET, when Meta Platforms (FB) announced COO Sheryl Sandberg would be stepping down from her position at the company. Sandberg, who joined Facebook in 2008, will stay on the company’s board after leaving the company in the fall.

Meta Platforms shares finished Wednesday’s trading session down 2.5{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}.

An upbeat earnings report from Salesforce (CRM) late Tuesday gave investor sentiment a boost early Wednesday after the software company raised its profit forecast and said it did not see any significant impact on operations from macroeconomic uncertainty.

The outlook was in contrast with some downbeat quarterly results from corporate peers that signaled struggles with rising costs and supply chain imbalances ahead.

“We’re just not seeing material impact on the broader economic world that all of you are in,” Salesforce Chief Executive Officer Marc Benioff said in an earnings call. Shares of Salesforce gained 9.8{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} during Wednesday’s session.

Despite a month of sharp gyrations in equity markets, the S&P 500 churned out a small gain of less than 1{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} – even after seven consecutive weeks of losses briefly dragged the index into bear market territory. The Dow Jones Industrial Average also closed slightly up for May, while the Nasdaq Composite deepened losses for the month amid a continued rotation out of technology stocks.

In the past decade, the month of June has returned an average 1.4{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}, ranking it the fourth best month of the year, according to data from LPL Financial. Over the past 20 years, however, the month has been weak, with only September worse for stocks.

“June has something for everyone, as it is no doubt a very weak month historically, but the past decade it has been strong,” LPL Financial Chief Market Strategist Ryan Detrick said in a note. “Still, after the big bounce in late May, we wouldn’t be surprised at all if this recent strength continued into a potential summer rally.”

Bespoke Investment Group pointed out in a note Tuesday that summer months have historically seen weaker stock market returns relative to winter and early spring. According to data from the firm, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has averaged a gain of 0.47{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} in June over the last century, but has been a “coin flip” for positive returns during the month, logging gains only 52{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} of the time.

10:46 a.m. ET: Jamie Dimon says ‘hurricane’ coming for the U.S. economy

JPMorgan (JPM) CEO Jamie Dimon is making waves on Wednesday with his comments at an investor conference.

Speaking at Bernstein’s Strategic Decisions Conference, Dimon said the U.S. economy is facing a “hurricane” as the Federal Reserve continues its process of normalizing interest rates. Dimon said he’d previously referred to impending challenges facing the economy as “storm clouds.”

“Right now, it’s kind of sunny, things are doing fine,” Dimon told the conference, according to a transcript from S&P Capital IQ. “Everyone thinks the Fed can handle this. That hurricane is right out there down the road, coming our way. We just don’t know if it’s a minor one or Superstorm Sandy…or Andrew or something like that. And you got to brace yourself.”

Dimon added that he thinks the banking industry is in great shape, as are consumers sitting on over $2 trillion in savings.

“Jobs are plentiful, wages are going up, consumers are spending,” Dimon said. “[The] lower income folks, not quite as much as before, but everybody else, it looks like they have $2 trillion more savings… I don’t think that’s going to stop…spending [in] 6 or 9 months. And so that to me is the bright clouds out there.”

10:20 a.m. ET: Manufacturing activity remains resilient in May

Two readings on the U.S. manufacturing sector in May showed continued growth amid investor concerns of an impending economic slowdown.

The Institute for Supply Management’s Manufacturing PMI for May hit 56.1, up from 55.4 in April and marking the 24th straight month of growth. S&P Global’s U.S. Manufacturing PMI hit 57 in May, down from 59.2 in April.

For both reports, any reading over 50 indicates expansion in the sector while readings below 50 indicate contraction.

The data wasn’t all sunny, however, with the ISM’s employment index showing an unexpected decline last month. Additionally, S&P’s report showed business confidence falling to the lowest level since October 2020.

“A solid expansion of manufacturing output in May should help drive an increase in GDP during the second quarter, with production growth running well above the average seen over the past decade,” said Chris Williamson, chief business economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence. “However, the rate of growth has slowed as producers report ongoing issues with supply chain delays and labor shortages, as well as slower demand growth.”

Commenting on the ISM’s latest report, Tim Fiore, chair of the ISM’s Manufacturing Business Survey Committee, said, “The U.S. manufacturing sector remains in a demand-driven, supply chain-constrained environment. Despite the Employment Index contracting in May, companies improved their progress on addressing moderate-term labor shortages at all tiers of the supply chain.”

10:07 a.m. ET: Job openings slide in April

The latest JOLTS — or Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey — report showed 11.4 million jobs were open on the last business day of April, down from 11.86 million the prior month. Economists expected this report to show 11.35 million jobs were open at the end of April.

According to the BLS, the biggest decreases by industry were in health care and social work, retail, and food services, which all saw openings drop by more than 100,000 from March to April.

Job openings are being closely watched by economists for signs of potential cooling in the labor market, with Fed chair Jay Powell telling reporters last month the number of job openings relative to unemployed workers shows an “imbalance” in the labor market.

Wednesday’s data suggest a potential step towards re-balancing this market.

Stocks claw back in another volatile session

Stocks claw back in another volatile session

U.S. stocks rebounded in another choppy session Thursday after renewed concerns over the economy and a weak outlook from market bellwether Microsoft (MSFT) weighed on sentiment in earlier trading.

The S&P 500 jumped 0.4{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}, climbing back from a lower open, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average hovered just above breakeven. The tech-heavy Nasdaq extended gains to 1.1{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} as all three indexes attempt to bounce back from two straight days of losses.

Shares of Microsoft slipped 2{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} at open after the technology giant lowered its profit and revenue outlook, citing headwinds from from moves in foreign exchange rates, joining other companies that have recently reported grappling with challenging macroeconomic conditions.

Investors also weighed a bevy of employment data. The Labor Department’s latest weekly jobless claims report showed applications for unemployment insurance unexpectedly fell to 200,000 in a sign labor market conditions remain a bright spot in the economy amid mounting worries of a slowdown. On the other hand, job creation in the U.S. private sector dropped off sharply last month to the slowest pace of growth in the COVID-era recovery, according to ADP’s private payrolls report.

Oil prices retreated from a rally earlier this week following reports Saudi Arabia and other OPEC members may boost crude production to offset a sharp drop in Russia’s output under new sanctions by the European Union. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) and Brent crude oil futures each fell more than 3{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} Thursday morning.

Wall Street weighed several quarterly reports in the early trade. Pet retailer Chewy (CHWY) saw shares pop more than 12{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} at open after the company reported a surprise profit following Wednesday’s closing bell. Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (HPE) added to a growing list of corporate names slashing forecasts over macroeconomic headwinds from supply chain disruptions, unfavorable currency movements and its exit from Russia. Shares fell roughly 8{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} at the start of trading.

More earnings are in store for traders through Friday from companies including Lululemon (LULU), RH (RH) and Okta (OKTA). With earnings season tailing off, investors will take their cue from economic data, with the labor market in focus.

On Wednesday, the April job openings report, also known as JOLTS, reflected a decline in the number of vacancies, a data point the Federal Reserve is likely to view positively as it works to cool the labor market. Manufacturing data from the Institute for Supply Management out Wednesday also pointed to resilience in the economy and suggested fears of downturn may be exaggerated.

The data coincided with market-moving comments from JPMorgan (JPM) CEO Jamie Dimon that signaled a grimmer outlook for the U.S. economic picture. At a conference Wednesday, the leader of the largest bank in the U.S. said the economy is facing a “hurricane” as the Federal Reserve moves forward with its monetary tightening plans.

“Are we going to slow down from a growth perspective? Yes, absolutely,” Cornerstone Wealth Group Chief Investment Officer Cliff Hodge told Yahoo Finance Live on Wednesday, commenting on Dimon’s remarks. “Are we going to fall into a recession? Eventually, but I think it is going to take longer to play out.”

In the last session, the Federal Reserve indicated in its periodic “Beige Book” that U.S. economic activity may have cooled in some parts of the country, weighed down by inflation, supply chain snafus and labor shortages.

“Worker shortages are still keeping labor markets tight and businesses understaffed,” LPL Financial Chief Economist Jeffrey Roach said in commentary. “In some districts, firms are freezing hirings, which is consistent with the decline in April job openings reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.”

9:18 a.m. ET: Another 200,000 Americans filed new claims last week

Applications for unemployment insurance unexpectedly fell in the latest weekly data suggesting labor market conditions remain a bright spot in the economy amid mounting worries of a slowdown.

The Labor Department’s latest weekly jobless claims report showed 200,000 claims were filed in the week ended May 28, coming in below the 210,000 economists surveyed by Bloomberg had expected.

Last week, the Labor Department’s weekly data raised concerns among investors that the labor market may be cooling as the Federal Reserve tightens financial conditions.

“Jobless claims were higher a couple weeks ago stoking some fears that the economy had suddenly hit a soft patch, but today’s data indicate that a storm is not brewing in the labor markets,” FWDBONDS Chief Economist Christopher Rupkey said in a note. “Quite the opposite, with the drop in the total number of people receiving unemployment compensation indicating the unemployment rate could drop in tomorrow’s monthly report to a new record low.

9:06 a.m. ET: US private payroll growth sees worst month since April 2020

Job creation in the U.S. private sector dropped off sharply last month to the slowest pace of growth in the COVID-era recovery, pointing to a cooldown in demand for labor amid a backdrop of rising interest rates and tighter financial conditions.

Private-sector payrolls grew by 128,000 in May, ADP said in its closely-watched monthly report on Thursday. This came following an increase of 202,000 jobs added in April, downwardly revised from 247,000 reported in the initial reading. Consensus economists were looking for private payrolls to rise by 300,000, according to Bloomberg data.

ADP’s monthly private jobs report comes ahead of the Labor Department’s official jobs report out Friday. While ADP’s report typically does not serve as a perfect indicator of what to expect in the government-issued data due to differences in survey methodology, the print has often served as a gauge of job growth that took place during a given period.

“Under a backdrop of a tight labor market and elevated inflation, monthly job gains are closer to pre-pandemic levels,” said ADP Chief Economist Nela Richardson.”The job growth rate of hiring has tempered across all industries, while small businesses remain a source of concern as they struggle to keep up with larger firms that have been booming as of late.”
