Stocks trade mixed as investors await Fed

U.S. stocks were mixed Tuesday after a whipsaw session in markets a day earlier, as investors appraised the next moves by the Federal Reserve and a fresh batch of quarterly earnings results.

The S&P 500 and Dow rose, while the Nasdaq dipped just after market open. On Monday, technology stocks had outperformed, leading the S&P 500 higher by 0.6{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}, and the Nasdaq up by 1.6{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}. And these moves in tech shares came even as the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield topped 3{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}, or its highest level since December 2018. In recent months, a rise in yields has coincided with a drop in tech shares, which are considered more vulnerable to higher rates that would weigh on growth stocks’ valuations.

The market moves at the start of this week extended the streak of volatile trading investors have endured over the past several weeks. The S&P 500 posted an 8.8{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} decline in April for its worst month since March 2020.

“Volatility skews in both directions. In this period when we expect heightened volatility because of all of the confluence of factors that we see from geopolitics to earnings to the Fed to inflation, you’re going to have big swings like this,” Ross Mayfield, Baird investment strategy analyst, told Yahoo Finance Live. “I think at a certain point, buyers do see some value in there. If you’re of the opinion that we’re not going to enter a recession … I think you start to see some value investors start to take some bites.”

Still, given the variety of concerns still present for the market outlook, many strategists have struck a more cautious tone on U.S. stocks for the near-term. In a note published Friday, Bank of America strategists led by Savita Subramanian slashed their price target on the S&P 500 by 100 points to 4,500.

“This year’s market does not appear to be dominated by one factor, be it fundamentals or positioning, cost of capital or corporate outlooks, but has been reacting to all of the above in big swings,” the analysts wrote.

And this week, investors are bracing for the Federal Reserve’s latest monetary policy decision, which is set to include measures intended to accelerate the central bank’s fight to bring down elevated inflation, even at the expense of some economic growth. Investors are looking for the Fed to raise rates by 50 basis points for the first time since 2000, and to officially announce the timing of the start of quantitative tightening, or the rolling of assets off the Fed’s $9 trillion balance sheet.

“There’s no doubt that there’s some anticipation out there of [Fed officials’] comments and their action,” Katie Stockton, Fairlead Strategies founder, told Yahoo Finance Live. “We’re seeing that in the marketplace. It’s very, very skittish, and probably reasonably so.”

“I think we all kind of know what’s coming. And yet sometimes that doesn’t matter. Sometimes the market comes into it and it can be deeply oversold,” she added. “I think it’s a pretty risky assumption to make in this kind of environment … I mean there’s hardly any stocks that have been unturned by the recent weakness. So I think we have to keep those risks in mind as we come into the numbers.”

8:37 a.m. ET: Clorox shares fall after company lowers full-year outlook on rising prices

Shares of Clorox (CLX) dipped in early trading Tuesday morning after the consumer staples company lowered its full-year profit guidance, which overshadowed otherwise upbeat results from its latest quarter.

For the fiscal third quarter, Clorox posted adjusted earnings of $1.31 on revenue of $1.81 billion. Both metrics topped consensus expectations, with Wall Street looking for adjusted earnings of 93 cents per share on revenue of $1.79 billion, according to Bloomberg data. However, Clorox’s gross margins contracted over last year, reaching 35.9{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} from 43.5{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}, “due mainly to higher manufacturing and logistics and commodity costs, partially offset by the benefits of pricing and cost savings initiatives,” according to Clorox’s press statement.

And these cost pressures are expected to linger for the rest of this year. Clorox said it expects full-year gross margins to decrease by up to 800 basis points, or 8 percentage points, due to “higher than previously anticipated commodity and manufacturing and logistics costs.” Full-year adjusted earnings per share are expected to between $4.05 and $4.30, down from a previous guidance range of between $4.25 and $4.50.

Stocks mixed following rally as investors monitor developments in Russia-Ukraine war

U.S. stocks were mixed Tuesday as investors monitored the war in Ukraine and braced for the possibility of new European sanctions against Russia.

The S&P 500 fell 0.2{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 70 points. The Nasdaq Composite was down roughly 0.3{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} after rallying in the previous session, buoyed by a 27{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} surge in Twitter (TWTR) that came after Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk revealed he purchased a 9.2{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} stake in the social media company. Meanwhile, WTI crude oil edged 0.7{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} higher to $104 per barrel.

Musk is “speaking with his money by saying that Twitter is an undervalued platform,” MKM Partners’ Rohit Kulkarni told Yahoo Finance Live. “He sees there are things they can do to improve the service, and he’s definitely hinting at a more active role.”

Wedbush Securities analyst and Tesla bull Dan Ives also told Yahoo Finance he predicts Musk will have an active stake in the social media platform over the coming weeks or months, and that his recent snap up of shares was “just the appetizer.”

Separately, Musk’s own company, electric-vehicle giant Tesla, contributed to the gains that propelled a take-off for tech during Monday’s trading session. Shares of the EV carmaker jumped nearly 6{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} after it reported vehicle delivery figures this weekend that came in higher than the same period last year.

Recession jitters were at bay on Monday after a closely-monitored portion of the Treasury yield curve inverted last week and spooked investors over the possibility of an imminent economic contraction. The phenomenon has a history of predicting a recession, with each of the last eight slowdowns dating back to 1969 preceded by a yield curve inversion. As of Monday morning, the yield on the benchmark 10-year note remained below that on the shorter-term 2-year note.

Still, worries about an economic downturn were not completely off the table for strategists.

Nomura Chief U.S. economist Robert Dent told Yahoo Finance Live he sees the potential for a “mild recession”

“We think that the cumulative risk of a recession between now and the end of 2024 stands at about 35{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} to 40{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996},” he said. “A lot of that is just coming from what we think is going to be this very aggressive response from the Fed to actually get inflation under control and make sure the labor market actually cools down.”

Uncertainty around the crisis in Eastern Europe also continues to be a headwind for investors. JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon in his widely-read shareholder letter warned that the war in Ukraine is likely to meaningfully slow the U.S. and global economy. In the U.S. specifically, the bank estimates the U.S. economy will grow roughly 2.5{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}, a downgrade from the institution’s initial GDP forecast of 3{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}, with larger cuts to forecasts on Russia and Europe’s economic outlooks.

“We do not know what its outcome ultimately will be, but the hostilities in Ukraine and the sanctions on Russia are already having a substantial economic impact,” said Dimon, adding that “many more” sanctions could be imposed on Russia and spur further unpredictability.

The European Union addressed apparent war crimes in Ukraine on Monday, indicating in a statement that officials would, “work on further sanctions against Russia” over the country’s targeted attacks on civilians. Some major European officials including Germany’s defense minister said they would support banning Russian natural gas — a move previously excluded from sanctions as Russia supplies about 40{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} of Europe’s gas energy.

Stocks mixed as EU eyes more sanctions against Russia

Stocks mixed as EU eyes more sanctions against Russia

U.S. stocks were mixed on Monday as investors monitored the potential for more sanctions against Russia amid ongoing concerns over inflation and global economic growth.

The S&P 500 traded flat, while the Dow dipped. The Nasdaq Composite rose about 0.4{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} just after market open as technology shares outperformed. Shares of Twitter (TWTR) soared by more than 20{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} after Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk disclosed he now owns an about 9.2{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} stake of the social media company.

Investors globally considered the European Union’s next punitive measures against Russia as the more than month-long war in Ukraine escalated further. The EU responded Monday to apparent war crimes in Ukraine, as Russian forces allegedly now widely killed civilians and attacked civilian infrastructure in major cities, with the bloc saying in a statement it would, “as a matter of urgency, work on further sanctions against Russia.” Some major European officials including Germany’s defense minister said they would support banning Russian natural gas — a move previously excluded from sanctions as Russia supplies about 40{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} of Europe’s gas energy.

U.S. crude oil prices edged higher Monday morning and looked to rise for the first time in three sessions. Brent crude oil, the international standard, also gained.

JPMorgan (JPM) CEO Jamie Dimon also called attention to the war in Ukraine as one of three key risks he saw to the economic outlook, according to his widely read annual shareholder letter released Monday. The other included “the dramatic stimulus-fueled recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic” as well as “the likely need for rapidly raising rates and the required reversal of QE [quantitative easing]” from the Federal Reserve, Dimon said.

“We do not know what its outcome ultimately will be, but the hostilities in Ukraine and the sanctions on Russia are already having a substantial economic impact. They have roiled global oil, commodity and agricultural markets,” Dimon said. “Our economists currently think that the euro area, highly dependent on Russia for oil and gas, will see GDP growth of roughly 2{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} in 2022, instead of the elevated 4.5{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} pace we had expected just six weeks ago. By contrast, they expect the U.S. economy to advance roughly 2.5{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} versus a previously estimated 3{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}.”

Concerns over the resilience of the U.S. economy in the face of a geopolitical crisis and still-elevated inflation have been fanned further as a closely watched portion of the Treasury yield curve inverted — a move that previously has preceded recessions. As of Monday morning, the yield on the benchmark 10-year note remained below that on the shorter-term 2-year note. Such a phenomenon has occurred before each of the last eight recessions since 1969.

“Investors have been particularly concerned about the prospect of yield curve inversion as a signal for imminent recession,” Goldman Sachs strategist David Kostin wrote in a note. “Our rates strategists recently raised their forecasts and now expect the 2-year UST and 10-year UST yields to end 2022 at 2.9{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} and 2.7{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}, respectively, for a 20 bp [basis point] inversion.”

“However, our strategists note that the nominal curve tends to invert more easily in high inflation environments, which means that it would take a deeper nominal curve inversion than in recent cycles to produce a comparable recession signal,” he added. “Asset indicators imply a 38{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} probability of recession within 24 months.”

9:42 a.m. ET: Hertz announces plans to buy EVs from Tesla rival Polestar

Hertz (HTZ) said Monday it planned to purchase as many as 65,000 electric vehicles from Polestar, an automotive start-up competing with incumbents like Tesla in the market for electric vehicles.

The car rental company said it would make these purchases over five years, with availability set to begin this spring in Europe and later this year in North America and Australia.

“For Hertz, the partnership is part of the company’s ongoing commitment to lead in electrification, shared mobility and a digital-first customer experience,” according to the company’s press statement. “In addition to making the fleet available to its business and leisure customers, Hertz is extending EVs to rideshare drivers as a way to further accelerate electrification.”

In October 2021, Hertz previously announced it ordered 100,000 Tesla Model 3 vehicles for delivery in late 2022.

Stocks turn mixed after Russian attack on Ukraine roils global markets

Stocks turn mixed after Russian attack on Ukraine roils global markets

Wall Street’s main benchmarks clawed back from session lows Thursday after Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine overnight rocked equity markets across the globe.

The Nasdaq Composite rebounded from a morning sell-off that saw the index tumble more than 3{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}. The Dow Jones Industrial Averaged recouped some losses after an 800-point nosedive but continued to trade lower, down more than 500 points to 32,591.57. The S&P 500 bounced back from a drop of 1.5{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} to hover just below its flatline.

Meanwhile, investors flocked to safe-haven plays amid a broader risk-off trade across global markets. Gold prices surged 2.1{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} to $1,970 an ounce, hovering around a one-year high. WTI crude oil jumped to its highest level since July 2014, notching the biggest surge since Nov. 2020.

President Joe Biden on Thursday said in a tweet Thursday that he and G7 counterparts agreed to move forward on “devastating packages of sanctions and other economic measures” in condemnation of Russia’s attack on Ukraine.

“I condemned this unprovoked and unjustified attack by Russian military forces,” Biden said in a seperate tweet, also indicating he spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on steps the administration is taking to rally international condemnation.

President Joe Biden unveiled the “first tranche” of financial sanctions Tuesday targeting Russia in response to Vladimir Putin’s move to recognize the independence of two pro-Moscow separatist republics in east Ukraine and deploy troops into the areas — a move seen by Western countries as a provocation and breach of international law.

European allies acted in lockstep to reprimand Russian aggression. Germany halted approval of the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline that would have deepened western Europe’s energy link to Russia, the world’s largest natural gas exporter. Fears of other energy-linked sanctions sent crude oil prices to a seven-year high and Brent crude towards $100 per barrel.

“Putin knew these were going to be coming,” CSIS International Security Program senior adviser Mark Cancian told Yahoo Finance Live. “He took his move anyway, so it’s unlikely that they will deter him.”

Risk assets slid on Tuesday as investors considered the financial market implications of an escalating threat of military attack and greater sanctions on Russia. As European allies also coordinated their response to Russia’s increased military presence in and around Ukraine, Germany halted approval of the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline that would have deepened western Europe’s energy link to Russia, the world’s largest natural gas exporter. Crude oil prices spiked to a seven-year high, and Brent crude neared $100 per barrel as investors contemplated the potential for further energy-linked sanctions on Russia, the third-largest oil producer in the world.

In the U.S., the conflict creates an added headwind for investors already grappling with a hawkish shift in Federal Reserve policy to intervene more aggressively in mitigating inflationary pressures. A war between Russia and Ukraine threatens to exacerbate already surging prices and spur other economic disruptions that could complicate the Fed’s policy-making choices.

Many strategists have argued that despite the weight of geopolitical turmoil on equities, the risk-off mood among traders stems primarily from worries around interest rate hikes.

“So far, it looks like Ukraine is not the reason for the drop, despite the fears,” Commonwealth Financial Network Chief Investment Officer Brad McMillan said in a note.

“But what has pulled the markets down, if not the Ukraine crisis?” McMillan wrote. “The most likely candidate—one which makes both fundamental and mathematical sense — is higher interest rates”

Brad McMillan points out that since the start of the year, the 10-Year U.S. Treasury yield is up from 1.63{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} to 1.97{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} at an increase of 34 basis points, or 21{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}. Typically, higher yields mean lower valuation, pushing the forward price/earnings ratio for the S&P 500 from roughly 22.35 at the end of 2021 to an estimated 19.1, a 15{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} decline.

“After adjusting for earnings beats this quarter, that drop in valuations pretty much explains the drop in the market, and that rationale doesn’t leave much, if any, room for worries about Ukraine,” McMillan noted. “Wall Street, then, seems to be much more worried about Fed Chairman Jay Powell than Vladimir Putin, at least at the moment.”

3:07 p.m. ET: SEC launches investigation into Elon Musk and brother’s stock sales

The Securities and Exchange Commission has initiated a probe into whether stock sales by Tesla Inc. (TSLA) Chief Executive Elon Musk and his brother violated insider trading rules, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal that cited people familiar with the matter.

The watchdog’s investigation began last year after the Tesla leader’s brother Kimbal Musk sold $108 million worth of company shares the day before Musk tweeted a poll asking whether he should sell 10{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} of his stake in Tesla.

Musk framed the potential sale as a way to cover taxes he would owe if lawmakers imposed new taxes on unrealized capital gains. Musk began selling billions of dollars worth of Tesla shares in the days following his tweet.

1:45 p.m. ET: UK reveals new package of sanctions to reprimand Russian aggression

Prime Minister Boris Johnson unveiled Britain’s largest-ever package of sanctions against Russia the West responds to the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine.

The sanctions target banks, members of President Vladimir Putin’s closest circle and wealthy Russians who frequent London.

1:18 p.m. ET: President Biden warns of “devastating packages of sanctions” against Russia

President Joe Biden is expected to unveil new sanctions against Russia on Thursday after Moscow launched a full-scale military attack on Ukraine, triggering condemnation and financial penalties from the United States and European allies.

The president is scheduled to announce the new measures at 1:30 p.m. ET, according to the White House.

Biden met with G7 allies Thursday to plan measures against Russia after the Kremlin initiated what the president deemed “a premeditated war” against Ukraine.

A year ago, 30-year loans averaged 2.97{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}.

Mortgage rates have surged roughly 84 basis points since December, leading to a decline in applications for home lending.

“Even with this week’s decline, mortgage rates have increased more than a full percentage over the last six months,” Freddie Mac chief economist Sam Khater said. “Overall economic growth remains strong, but rising inflation is already impacting consumer sentiment, which has declined in recent months. As we enter the spring homebuying season with higher mortgage rates and continued low inventory, we expect home price growth to remain firm before cooling off later this year.”
