Stocks turn mixed after Russian attack on Ukraine roils global markets

Wall Street’s main benchmarks clawed back from session lows Thursday after Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine overnight rocked equity markets across the globe.

The Nasdaq Composite rebounded from a morning sell-off that saw the index tumble more than 3{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}. The Dow Jones Industrial Averaged recouped some losses after an 800-point nosedive but continued to trade lower, down more than 500 points to 32,591.57. The S&P 500 bounced back from a drop of 1.5{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} to hover just below its flatline.

Meanwhile, investors flocked to safe-haven plays amid a broader risk-off trade across global markets. Gold prices surged 2.1{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} to $1,970 an ounce, hovering around a one-year high. WTI crude oil jumped to its highest level since July 2014, notching the biggest surge since Nov. 2020.

President Joe Biden on Thursday said in a tweet Thursday that he and G7 counterparts agreed to move forward on “devastating packages of sanctions and other economic measures” in condemnation of Russia’s attack on Ukraine.

“I condemned this unprovoked and unjustified attack by Russian military forces,” Biden said in a seperate tweet, also indicating he spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on steps the administration is taking to rally international condemnation.

President Joe Biden unveiled the “first tranche” of financial sanctions Tuesday targeting Russia in response to Vladimir Putin’s move to recognize the independence of two pro-Moscow separatist republics in east Ukraine and deploy troops into the areas — a move seen by Western countries as a provocation and breach of international law.

European allies acted in lockstep to reprimand Russian aggression. Germany halted approval of the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline that would have deepened western Europe’s energy link to Russia, the world’s largest natural gas exporter. Fears of other energy-linked sanctions sent crude oil prices to a seven-year high and Brent crude towards $100 per barrel.

“Putin knew these were going to be coming,” CSIS International Security Program senior adviser Mark Cancian told Yahoo Finance Live. “He took his move anyway, so it’s unlikely that they will deter him.”

Risk assets slid on Tuesday as investors considered the financial market implications of an escalating threat of military attack and greater sanctions on Russia. As European allies also coordinated their response to Russia’s increased military presence in and around Ukraine, Germany halted approval of the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline that would have deepened western Europe’s energy link to Russia, the world’s largest natural gas exporter. Crude oil prices spiked to a seven-year high, and Brent crude neared $100 per barrel as investors contemplated the potential for further energy-linked sanctions on Russia, the third-largest oil producer in the world.

In the U.S., the conflict creates an added headwind for investors already grappling with a hawkish shift in Federal Reserve policy to intervene more aggressively in mitigating inflationary pressures. A war between Russia and Ukraine threatens to exacerbate already surging prices and spur other economic disruptions that could complicate the Fed’s policy-making choices.

Many strategists have argued that despite the weight of geopolitical turmoil on equities, the risk-off mood among traders stems primarily from worries around interest rate hikes.

“So far, it looks like Ukraine is not the reason for the drop, despite the fears,” Commonwealth Financial Network Chief Investment Officer Brad McMillan said in a note.

“But what has pulled the markets down, if not the Ukraine crisis?” McMillan wrote. “The most likely candidate—one which makes both fundamental and mathematical sense — is higher interest rates”

Brad McMillan points out that since the start of the year, the 10-Year U.S. Treasury yield is up from 1.63{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} to 1.97{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} at an increase of 34 basis points, or 21{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}. Typically, higher yields mean lower valuation, pushing the forward price/earnings ratio for the S&P 500 from roughly 22.35 at the end of 2021 to an estimated 19.1, a 15{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} decline.

“After adjusting for earnings beats this quarter, that drop in valuations pretty much explains the drop in the market, and that rationale doesn’t leave much, if any, room for worries about Ukraine,” McMillan noted. “Wall Street, then, seems to be much more worried about Fed Chairman Jay Powell than Vladimir Putin, at least at the moment.”

1:45 p.m. ET: UK reveals new package of sanctions to reprimand Russian aggression

Prime Minister Boris Johnson unveiled Britain’s largest-ever package of sanctions against Russia the West responds to the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine.

The sanctions target banks, members of President Vladimir Putin’s closest circle and wealthy Russians who frequent London.

“This hideous and barbarous venture of Vladimir Putin must end in failure,” Johnson told parliament Thursday. “For our part today, the UK is announcing the largest and most severe package of economic sanctions that Russia has ever seen.”

1:18 p.m. ET: President Biden warns of “devastating packages of sanctions” against Russia

President Joe Biden is expected to unveil new sanctions against Russia on Thursday after Moscow launched a full-scale military attack on Ukraine, triggering condemnation and financial penalties from the United States and European allies.

The president is scheduled to announce the new measures at 1:30 p.m. ET, according to the White House.

Biden met with G7 allies Thursday to plan measures against Russia after the Kremlin initiated what the president deemed “a premeditated war” against Ukraine.

12:47 p.m. ET: Mortgage rates fall slightly lower after nearing 4{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}

Mortgage rates slipped this week as U.S. Treasuries were weighed down by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The rate on the average 30-year fixed home mortgage fell to 3.89{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}, down from 3.92{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} a week ago, according to Freddie Mac. A year ago, 30-year loans averaged 2.97{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}.

Mortgage rates have surged roughly 84 basis points since December, leading to a decline in applications for home lending.

“Even with this week’s decline, mortgage rates have increased more than a full percentage over the last six months,” Freddie Mac chief economist Sam Khater said. “Overall economic growth remains strong, but rising inflation is already impacting consumer sentiment, which has declined in recent months. As we enter the spring homebuying season with higher mortgage rates and continued low inventory, we expect home price growth to remain firm before cooling off later this year.”

8:38 a.m. ET: Jobless claims renew decline after uptick in prior read

First-time unemployment filings dipped in the latest weekly data, resuming a recent downward trend in jobless claims after a temporary spike.

The Labor Department most recent weekly jobless claims report showed 232,000 Americans filed for unemployment in the week ended Feb 19., down from a revised 249,000 during the prior period. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg projected a read of 235,000, according to consensus data.

Prior to the latest figure, jobless claims ticked up slightly after a consistent decline that signaled Omicron-related pressures on the labor market were beginning to abate following a temporary surge in mid-January to a print of nearly 300,000.

“Ongoing issues with labor supply has led companies to increase retention rates, which has contributed to the low level of jobless claims,” Bank of America economists wrote in a note published Friday. “We expect this to persist over the course of the year.”

The charts say stocks could have significantly additional to fall as buyers price in the three-headed monster that is elevated inflation, soaring desire costs from the Federal Reserve and a potential Ukraine-Russia war.

“Every aspect of my do the job carries on to propose that this is a chart guide consistent with a 20{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} drawdown in the S&P [500]. Although ephemeral reduction rallies will manifest as the conflict ebbs and flows, the seeds of the current decline ended up planted by plan and the pandemic prolonged before troops massed on the border, and I urge you to combat the temptation “buy when the cannons are firing” for something more than a “trader’s bounce” although even now staring down the ominous specter of the maximum inflation in 40 several years and extra hikes than conferences to fight explained inflation,” explained veteran EvercoreISI technical analyst Loaded Ross.

Ross’ work displays (see chart down below) the S&P 500 becoming vulnerable to a shift down to 3,600 if the main inventory index drops underneath the critical 4,200 amount.

“When bounces will arise (see Europe) as bulls attempt to defend the neckline of the properly-described head and shoulders leading, the sum of the charts throughout asset lessons is only as well considerably to bear,” Ross extra.

That 4,200 stage on the S&P 500 could be tested shortly.

On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the deployment of Russian troops to two breakaway areas of Ukraine. The transfer — observed by the West as a provocation — arrived immediately after Putin recognized their independence.

Nations around the world wasted no time employing fresh new sanctions on Russia, providing a style of what could occur economically should Putin invade Ukraine.

The U.S. unveiled a first tranche of sanctions on Russia Tuesday afternoon.

Consumers are acting more bullish than they’re saying

Consumers are acting more bullish than they’re saying

A version of this post was originally published on TKer.co.

Despite widely-reported disruptions tied to Omicron and frustrations about inflation, the U.S. economy continues to perform very well.

Retail sales in January jumped by 3.8{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} from December to $649.8 billion. This was much better than the 2{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} increase expected by economists. This was the biggest jump since March 2021, when stimulus checks were hitting Americans’ bank accounts.

(Source: Census, FRED)

From Bloomberg: “Eight of the 13 retail categories rose in the month. Sales at non-store retailers surged 14.5{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} after plummeting in December. Motor vehicle sales rose 5.7{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} following a decline in the prior month. Home furnishing stores also posted a solid sales advance. Receipts at restaurants and bars, the report’s only services-oriented category, fell 0.9{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}, likely reflecting the record surge in Covid-19 cases seen in January.“

Wells Fargo economists noted that consumer spending “may have lost some momentum in the final months of 2021, but today’s retail sales report for January says that consumers have swaggered into 2022 undaunted by soaring inflation and soaring COVID cases that month.”

Consumers are still buying despite inflation. (Getty)

Some of the gain is attributable to inflation (i.e. stuff just costs more). But not all of it.

“Last week we learned the consumer price index rose a better-than-expected 0.6{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} during the month, while goods prices specifically rose another 0.8{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996},” the Wells Fargo economists added. “While not perfectly comparable, goods consumer prices can be used as a proxy to estimate inflation-adjusted retail sales, and the gain in January prices still suggests real sales rose a whopping 2.95{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} last month.”

What consumers do > what consumers say

One thing that has been made very clear over the past year is that what consumers say sometimes contradict what consumers do.

Yes, it’s the case that consumers are noticing inflation in their everyday lives, and they’re not thrilled about it. According to the University of Michigan, consumer sentiment is at its lowest level since October 2011 due to “weakening personal financial prospects, largely due to rising inflation.“

But it’s also the case that consumers generally have the financial capacity to pay for those higher prices, thanks to a combination of rising employment, higher wages, and accumulated excess savings.

And it turns out that overall, having the capacity to pay is more than offsetting the downside that comes from negative sentiment tied to inflation. It’s a contradiction that’s proving bullish for businesses and investors in those businesses.

“We haven’t seen any meaningful difference yet in how they’re shopping,” Brett Biggs, CFO of Walmart, told Yahoo Finance’s Brian Sozzi on Thursday. “We know consumers are focused on inflation, but we’re not seeing major changes in shopping patterns.”

Biggs’ statement came after Walmart reported better-than-expected quarterly sales and earnings growth. WMT shares surged 4{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} following the news.

For investors, what consumers do matters much more than what consumers say. Spending, not sentiment, powers business activity, which translates into earnings growth.

📈 Stock market declines: The S&P 500 fell 1.6{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} last week. For more on market volatility, read this.

Supply chains improving: According to Census data released Wednesday, the inventory/sales ratio¹ for all businesses stood at 1.29 in December, down from 1.35 during the prior year. Back in February 2020, before the pandemic disrupted the supply chain, this ratio was elevated at 1.42. While inventory levels remain depressed, they are at least improving. “The sixth sequential month of accelerating inventory gains is an encouraging sign that supply chains’ worst snarls are behind us,” Oren Klachkin, lead U.S. economist at Oxford Economics, wrote on Wednesday. “We look for inventories to continue rising this year as businesses work to fulfill backlogged orders and supply-side constraints very slowly ease.“ For more on this, read this.

📈 Mortgage rates rise: The average rate for the 30-year fixed rate mortgage jumped to 3.92{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} from 3.69{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} the week prior. From Freddie Mac: “Mortgage rates jumped again due to high inflation and stronger than expected consumer spending. The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage is nearing four percent, reaching highs we have not seen since May 2019. As rates and house prices rise, affordability has become a substantial hurdle for potential homebuyers, especially as inflation threatens to place a strain on consumer budgets.“

🏘 Home sales surge: Sales of previously-owned homes jumped 6.7{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} in January to an annualized rate of 6.5 million units, according to the National Association of Realtors (NAR). “Buyers were likely anticipating further rate increases and locking-in at the low rates, and investors added to overall demand with all-cash offers,” Lawrence Yun, NAR’s chief economist, said on Friday.

Sales might’ve been even stronger were it not for the record low inventory of homes.

🏘 But new home construction falls: Housing starts fell 4.1{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} in January from December, according to Census data released on Thursday. This was the first decline in four months. However, building permits climbed by 0.7{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996}. Taken together, the data suggests the challenge in the housing market continues to be supply, not demand. “The availability of labor and lots also remain key headwinds, with labor likely to become more challenging in 2022,” Robert Dietz, chief economist at the National Association of Home Builders, wrote on Thursday. 🏨 People are staying at hotels: From WSJ: “Marriott International Inc. said demand for business and leisure travel continued to grow in the holiday quarter despite a setback from the spread of the Omicron variant. Marriott, whose portfolio encompasses nearly 8,000 properties world-wide, said Tuesday that its quarterly revenue more than doubled to $4.45 billion from a year earlier, when Covid-19 cases were surging and health officials warned against travel.“

🏡 People are staying at Airbnbs, too: From Airbnb: “Specifically, gross nights booked in December 2021 grew more than 40{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} from 2020, and the cancellation rate for December trips was lower than a year ago. And despite the continued near-term uncertainties, we see evidence of strong pent-up demand: as of the end of January 2022, we had over 25{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} more nights booked for the summer travel season than at this time in 2019.“

🎈Wholesale prices are still rising: On Tuesday, we learned the producer price index rose by 1.0{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} month-over-month in January. This reflects a 9.6{21df340e03e388cc75c411746d1a214f72c176b221768b7ada42b4d751988996} increase from a year ago. Producer prices reflect what businesses pay for the materials that go into the goods they eventually sell to their customers. And while businesses will make an effort to absorb some of those higher costs, they’ll pass some of the costs on through consumer price hikes. For more on this, read this.

Up the road 🛣

Friday comes with the January personal income and spending report, which will include an update on the Fed’s preferred measure of inflation: the core personal consumption expenditures price index. ¹The inventory/sales ratio reflects how much of a business’s inventory goes out as a sale in a month. If the ratio is at 2.0, then the business stocks twice the amount of goods that it sells. If the ratio is at 1.0, then goods are getting sold as quickly as it gets stocked.
